Rob’s interest in music production started in the early eighty’s in Bristol U.K. listening to dub reggae, playing around with old reel to reel tape recorders, making loops and playing sounds through echo pedals.
He played rhythm guitar for a local reggae band doing gigs supporting the likes of Mark Stewart, Aswad and Sugar Minot and recording twelve’s with “The Mad Professor” at “Ariwa studios”.
Around ‘85 he met up with Ray Mighty. On discovering that they had a similar interest in synchronising beat machines, synths and sound effects, the untrained pair began producing their own sound based on hip hop beats, dub reggae treatments and sixties melodies.
In late ‘87, on their own “Three Stripe Records” label, Smith and Mighty produced and released their first single, “Anyone.” a bass driven cover version of Bacharachs “Anyone who had a heart”. After a follow up underground hit “Walk On By”, The pair took on a string of productions including Massive Attack’s debut single “Any Love”, and top ten hit “Wishing on a star” for “The Fresh Four” (who’s members included the young DJ’s Krust and Suv)

Rob’s passion with bass and dub treatments has been evident throughout. From Smith and Mighty productions like “Bass Is Maternal”, the dub fuelled drum and bass sounds of “More Rockers”, his collaboration with “Henry And Louis” as “Blue And Red”, solo albums for Grand Central Records and Rush Production (Japan), and more recently with the RSD imprint.

Currently DJ’ing all over, from London’s “Fabric” & “FWD” to Tokyo’s “Unit”.
Rob has also been busy making remixes for Zion Train, UB40, DJ Pinch, Antennasia (Japan), Lee Scratch Perry, Dr Meaker, Evergreen & Landlord, as well as playing guitar with Bristol ten piece band “Dub From Atlantis”.
